Latest LMI

  • There are over 22,265 workplaces in the IT & Telecoms industry in London – 93% of which are IT companies and 7% Telecoms. In the IT industry in the region, a small number of large firms employ a large proportion of the workforce; micro firms make up 94% of the number of IT & Telecoms businesses in London, but just 27% of the actual workforce. By contrast, firms with 200 or more employees make up less than 1% of the total number of workplaces, but employ 34% of the workforce.
  • 231,500 people employed in London work in the IT & Telecoms workforce. This comprises around 133,300 in the IT & Telecoms industry itself, and a further 95,500 working as IT or Telecoms professionals in other industries.
  • The profile of IT & Telecoms professionals in London is an ageing one. The proportion aged 16-29 has dropped from 41% in 2001 to 24% in 2007, as the sector favours experienced workers from other sectors over young recruits from the education system.
  • The IT & Telecoms workforce in the region is highly qualified. 62% of IT & Telecoms professionals hold a qualification at level 4 or higher, compared to 45% for the overall working population in London. Moreover, only 4% of those IT & Telecoms professionals are not qualified to level 2, compared to 12% of London’s employed workforce.

The Olympics challenge

The London 2012 Olympics offer a renewed challenge to London and the whole of England, with regards to IT and Telecoms skills needs and development. According to a report by Cambridge Econometrics, 'What Skills by When', the IT and Telecoms industry in London is projected to grow by 38% from 2006 to 2021 - compared with 15 % across all industries over the same period. This represents 65,000 extra employees needed in the IT & Telecoms industry from 2006 to 2021. For more details on the research, please see a summary below:
