Women in IT

Background research

Although women account for 46% of the UK labour force,
they make up just 19% of the IT and Telecoms workforce.

As IT becomes increasingly critical to the success of most
businesses, significant numbers of people are needed to enter the IT workforce, filling increasingly complex roles.  To achieve the volumes of new entrants required, urgent action is needed to address the gender imbalance that is endemic in the IT workforce.

You can do IT too! - Role models video

The "You can do IT too!" video, sponsored by CG Resources, DTIIBM, IMISMicrosoft and UfI / learndirect, profiles five women with successful careers in the IT sector.  Each case study explores how a woman has developed a flourishing career in a particular area of the IT industry.  The film also looks at how these women manage their careers and personal lives in a way that suits their individual needs for a work / life balance.

Programmes of action

Government is working in close partnership with the private, public and voluntary sectors to address the gender imbalance within the IT and Telecoms workforce.
