Framework for IT professional skills, knowledge and experience

e-skills UK, the UK's only independent voice on technology skills, has created a common language and framework for defining IT professional skills, knowledge and experience. Entitled 'e-skills procom', the framework unites and builds on existing skills and development programmes such as the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA), the National Occupational Standards and BCS’s Chartered Professional programme, to establish a consistent approach to expressing IT professional capabilities.

How can the common language and framework clarify and innovate skills development?

e-skills procom, and the revised NOS, will provide a common language for employers, IT professionals, professional bodies, Higher Education Institutions and training providers.  The e-skills procom framework provides the structure for the redevelopment of the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for IT Professionals which e-skills UK administers on behalf of employers.

  • Employers will be able to understand clearly what someone should be able to do and the standard of professional competence they can expect. They can use the model to support recruitment, performance management and staff development, among other things.
  • Professional bodies, Higher Education Institutions and training providers will be able to use the model to plan and align development programmes and qualifications, ensuring they are fit-for-purpose and meet employer and individual needs.
  • IT professionals will be able to identify their unique profile based on their role, qualifications, skills and experience. They will be able to use the model to map their own development needs, career paths and aspirations.
