National Occupational Standards for IT users: introduction
Through this consultation we seek your views on the revised National Occupational Standards (NOS) for IT users and qualifications based on the NOS

What are NOS?

National Occupational Standards set out measurable performance outcomes to which an individual is expected to work in a given occupation. Developed by employers across the UK, NOS set out the skills, knowledge and understanding required to perform competently in the workplace.

The new standards reflect the rapidly changing IT user environment and new national qualifications frameworks.

Please let us have your comments by 20th September prior to final publication at end of October.

In the revised NOS, we have defined 26 subjects (known as Areas of Competence or AOC). These are grouped into 3 disciplines under the general aim of improving personal efficiency and productivity. This is shown in the diagram below.

We are keen to gather feedback from 3 groups of people:
- Employers with responsibility for staff training and development
- Training providers who offer IT user courses and qualifications
- Individuals – as end-users of ICT systems for work, study or leisure

The survey combines both questions to review the overall approach we are taking with the revised standards, and detailed questions to review individual areas of competence described in the standards.

There are 26 Areas of Competence in total, most of which have been written at 3 levels – this is lengthy but we are asking you to focus on a few Areas where you feel you can contribute most knowledgeably.

The first part of the survey should take about 10 minutes, part B perhaps a little longer, however you can revisit your answers to add to your comments at any time.

All responses will be treated as anonymous, unless you wish to register for further information from e-skills UK
