CC4G - Computer Clubs for Girls

Transforming the attitude of a generation of girls to IT

Over the past 3 years, e-skills UK Computer Clubs for Girls (CC4G) has changed the way girls think about technology and IT careers. CC4G are fun and informal out-of-school-hours clubs designed to engage young girls in IT and transform their attitudes towards technology-related careers. The clubs provide 10 to 14 year old girls with creative and interactive activities which focus on their areas of interest such as fashion, celebrity and music.

Background

CC4G was launched across England in 2005 with funding for 3 years from the DCSF. Between 2005 and 2008, CC4G has engaged more than 3,600 schools and 125,000 members in England alone. Projects have also been established in Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland and take up there has been equally as enthusiastic.

Schools and Partners

Schools and partners have been instrumental in helping CC4G to reach its 125,000 members mark. Clubs are run voluntarily by schools, and facilitators commit their time to running out of school hours Clubs for students aged 10-14. Partners have also contributed in a variety of ways by running Clubs, promoting CC4G, training the trainers and providing ongoing support.

Links with employers

Creating links between employers and schools is an important part of CC4G. It ensures that girls are inspired by the exciting opportunities available to them through IT and that they develop the skills needed by industry. During the last 3 years, 100 employers have engaged with CC4G, providing inspiration and new positive experiences to CC4G members.

The next generation

Over the past 3 years, CC4G has been an inspirational resource for teachers and girls, has sparked students' interest in technology and contributed to a shift towards a more positive perception of IT. The end of the DCSF contract marks the start of the next generation of CC4G and will bring exciting changes to ensure that CC4G remains at the cutting edge and is an inspirational example of how to use technology. The next generation CC4G will provide a dynamic and flexible learning environment and reflect technology advances over the last 3 years. Look out for the new CC4G during the next school year!

CC4G was officially launched in England in June 2005 with a national programme supported by the DCSF. The programme was pioneered in the South East by SEEDA. e-skills UK and DCSF acknowledges SEEDA's financial support and role as founding partner.

CC4G was launched in Scotland in March 2006 and has been piloted in Wales and Northern Ireland.
