Employers invited to help set standards for IT skills

The industry wide 'language ' for technology skills

Companies want to know that IT training and development will provide their employees with the right technology skills at the right level. When recruiting people to work in or with IT, they want to be able to look at a CV and understand exactly what someone should be able to do. All this depends on the National Occcupational Standards (NOS) for IT – the industry-wide 'language' for technology skills which ensures that everyone involved with IT is trained, assessed and developed against consistent measures.

The National Occupational Standards for IT Professionals and for IT Users are being updated during 2008 and employers are being offered a unique opportunity to help ensure they meet business needs. We have now produced a revised draft for the new NOS.

How to get involved

Standards for IT Professionals

An update on progress will be available shortly.

Standards for IT users

There are 3 main ways you can get involved with the development of IT User NOS:

  1. Complete the online consultation about the new IT User Standards at www.e-skills.com/NOSsurvey - the survey will be live between 11 August and 25 September 2008
  2. Visit the NOS website at http://nos2008.e-skills.com. This latest version is available online for you to comment on and provide further input
  3. Attend one of our employer focus group events during September to be held in York, London and South Wales. Please note these workshops are for employers only.

Your input is very important!

We previously held a series of exclusive events for employers, throughout November 2007, to listen to views and opinions. There were two half-day meetings at each event, one focused on the needs of IT professionals and the other on those of IT users. We held seven events across the whole of the UK and feedback from these events has provided vital input to the draft Standards.

Please note..

There is currently no change to arrangements for qualifications based on the IT User standards. The existing NOS remain the basis for the ITQ qualification.
