Transferable skills
Leadership, Business and Personal Competencies are an important aspect of every IT Professional's skills. These 'transferable competencies' reflect the importance of every IT
Professional possessing, in addition to the specific subject matter expertise of their discipline, a balanced set of business, personal and leadership competencies as appropriate to their role.
Transferable Competencies provide a generic backcloth to all disciplines, ranging in level from the core competencies to be able to operate in a professional IT environment through to the strategic competencies needed to underpin the most senior level IT professional and management roles.
You can view a brief description and list of areas for each of the skills sets online - Personal , Business and Leadership - but you will need to download the full document below for details on the competencies and underpinning knowledge & understanding for each skill set.
Acquisition and progression
As an individual progresses through the professional levels the e-skills procom model as their career progresses, the balance of the three transferable competencies will alter such that at the lower levels there will be a greater need for personal competencies moving through to greater business
competency and finally to a need for the highest levels of leadership competencies.
The development of transferable competencies in an individual will follow a continuum, starting with key skills in school up to age 14-16 and through the PLTs at ages 14 to 19, and through university education. Here for example, transferable competencies are at the core of the e-skills IT Management for Business qualification, developing and evidencing a wide range of skills and competencies valued by employers.
