Welsh Baccalaureate

How the Welsh Baccalaureate with Principal Learning in IT is helping young people prepare for successful careers

The Welsh Baccalaureate is designed to make young Welsh people more attractive as employees.
It does this by giving 14-19 year olds broader experiences and skills than traditional learning programmes, while the Principal Learning in IT gives them an insight into what it’s like to work in IT. They can also study GCSEs, A-Levels and NVQs as part of their Welsh Baccalaureate.
What do people study on the Welsh Baccalaureate?
All students complete 5 core components:
key skills
Wales, Europe and the world
work-related education
personal and social education
an extended project
Students then choose a Principal Learning line of study and an optional programme from GCSEs and A-Levels, to NVQs.
To give learners an idea of what it’s like to work in IT, e-skills UK has developed the Principal Learning in Information Technology with employers and universities.
What is the Principal Learning in IT?
The Principal Learning in IT gives students technical, business and interpersonal skills to help them move on to higher education, an apprenticeship or employment.
Learners also find out about how IT is used in real-life work situations and gain a broader understanding of the depth of roles available in IT careers.
Students will also learn how to:
manage and deliver successful IT projects
develop team-working, communication and problem-solving skills
create multimedia products
produce small-scale technology systems
