e-skills UK and MPs from all major parties have launched the sixth Make IT Happy competition, a UK-wide technology challenge for primary school students aged 9 to 11.
The Make IT Happy 2012 competition is run by the Parliamentary Internet, Communications and Technology Forum (PICTFOR) and e-skills UK, the Sector Skills Council for Business and Information Technology and sponsored by the Institution of Engineering and Technology and Nominet Trust. Already, it has received backing from more than 60 MPs from across the UK.
The theme for this year's competition is Make IT Healthy. Schools are challenged to show us how they use IT to contribute to a healthier life for students, the school community and even for those in the wider community.
Twelve winning schools from across the UK will be awarded £1,200 each. From these entries three overall winners will be chosen to receive additional cash prizes. All winners will also be invited to attend an awards ceremony in June 2012 at the Houses of Parliament.
Alun Michael, Labour MP for Cardiff South and Penarth and Chairman of PICTFOR said:
"We’re delighted to see so many MPs supporting Make IT Happy, now in its sixth year and going from strength to strength.
This year’s theme challenges schools to explore how technology can enhance their own and others’ wellbeing – a great fit with the national curriculum, and particularly appropriate in an Olympic year. We look forward to a bumper crop of inspiring entries."
Karen Price, CEO of e-skills UK said:
"Technology doesn’t just underpin the UK economy. It is an enabler with the potential to influence every aspect of people’s lives.
This year we look forward to seeing the innovative solutions participating schools will come up with to improve personal health, fitness and wellbeing.
Make IT Happy provides the IT industry’s future talent with the opportunity to push the boundaries of their imaginations, to learn and demonstrate the power of technology to improve their own and others lives."
