e-skills UK's Behind the Screen cyber security project has been shortlisted in the 15th annual Bett Awards, the premier honours in the digital education sector. They are run in conjunction with the Bett show, the world’s leading event for learning technology.
Behind the Screen’s Cyber Ninjas module is one of the eight finalists in the Secondary Digital Content category. It addresses the core elements of cyber security in a lively and engaging way for young people in Key Stage 4 - those aged 14 - 16.
Students progress through seven challenges, collecting belts as they go, and foiling the evil machinations of Nemesis and his Henchman as they try to breach the security of Cyber City School. Supported by infographics, games, comic books and audio guides, the content covers awareness and planning; cyber crime and computer forensics; security practices and principles; safety, privacy and ethics; and online interaction.
"We’re thrilled to have been shortlisted for this award, which recognises the innovative work we’ve been doing with employers and educators," says Sue Nieland, director of the Behind the Screen programme at e-skills UK. "This module addresses the pressing issue of cyber security in a way that young people find genuinely exciting and motivating. Not only is the content deep and rigorous, but the graphic design and presentation are ground-breaking."
"This is far more than just Internet safety - the module teaches skills and attitudes that employers tell us young people need," adds Karen Price, CEO of e-skills UK. "We’re delighted to have reached the final stage, alongside some of the best of the UK’s innovators in digital education. We’re very grateful to all the employers who have contributed to creating this module including BP, BT, CREST, PwC and Templar Executives."
The winners will be announced at the Bett Awards dinner on Wednesday 30 January 2013 at the Grange Tower Bridge Hotel, Tower Bridge, London.
